Newcastle target James Maddison is a “priority” for the north East outfit, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Toon Army have already seen offers rejected for the England midfielder, but the transfer guru expects Eddie Howe’s side to continue their pursuit of the ex-Norwich and Coventry man.
What’s the latest news involving Maddison?
Despite being the richest club in world football, it’s still been a frustrating transfer window for the Magpies.
They have brought in Nick Pope, Matt Targett and Sven Botman, but Howe has been unable to bring in reinforcements at the top end of the pitch.
Newcastle have tried to change that in recent days, though, after they saw a £40m bid rejected for Maddison, who’s valued at £60m by Leicester.
Despite their asking price, the St James’ Park outfit increased their second offer to £50m, although it once again fell short of the Foxes’ asking price and was therefore knocked back.
What did Romano say about Maddison?
Speaking before Newcastle did launch a second bid for the £110,000 per-week star, he told GIVEMESPORT: “Everything is so open. They tried for Maddison and it’s one of the priorities they have, the creative midfielder, so there could be an opportunity to try again with another bid in the next days.”
Is Maddison worth £60m?
£60m for a player with less than two years left on their contract might be considered quite expensive, but Maddison’s attacking output in recent years highlight why Leicester rate him so highly.
Since joining from Norwich back in 2018, Maddison, described by Danny Simpson as ‘world class‘, has scored 45 goals and laid on 32 assists, with 58 of his goal contributions coming in the Premier League, at a rate of better than one every three games.
Surprisingly, the creator still has only one England cap to his name, but he’s just enjoyed the best season of his career, where he scored 18 goals and added 12 assists in all competitions, which saw him named as the club’s player of the year.
Therefore, it’s no wonder Leicester are demanding such a big fee, and judging by his form last season, it’s probably justified, especially in the current market.
