As reported by Bild, RB Leipzig want to extend the contract of Joško Gvardiol (20) beyond 2026 with an increased salary amid interest from Premier League duo Manchester City and Chelsea.
The Croatia international currently earns around €2m per year and with a new contract, which would run until 2027, Gvardiol would earn a salary up to €7m, a €5m increase.
A new contract for Gvardiol would be similar to that of Christopher Nkunku, who signed a two-year contract extension in June until 2026, with his previous deal expiring in 2024.
Per the report, the chances of Gvardiol extending his Leipzig contract are good. The Croatian feels comfortable at the club and is appreciated by Leipzig bosses.
Leipzig have already rejected a reported €80m offer from Manchester City for Gvardiol, whilst fellow Premier League side Chelsea want to use Timo Werner as a makeweight to sign the central-defender. However, Leipzig remain adamant that the player won’t be leaving this summer.
With the Bundesliga kicking off this weekend, Gvardiol is back in team training following thigh surgery but Leipzig’s game against Stuttgart on Sunday is probably too early for the Croatian.
