£50m star to ‘seriously consider’ exit from Old Trafford

Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka will now have to ‘seriously’ consider a move away from the club, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 24-year-old has slipped down the pecking order at Old Trafford over the last year and was linked with an exit over the summer but was kept around after a suitable successor was not found.

What is the latest news involving Wan-Bissaka?

Back in June, it was reported that new United manager Erik ten Hag had informed Wan-Bissaka that he was free to leave as he did not feature in the Dutchman’s first-team plans.

BBC Sport then disclosed that the right-back’s former club Crystal Palace were interested in re-signing him as intrigue in his services began to ramp up, just three years after he departed south London for £50 million.

And The Athletic disclosed in the final days of the summer transfer window that both Palace and West Ham saw approaches for Wan-Bissaka rejected by the Red Devils as it would have been too late to bring in a replacement.

The former England Under-21 international has found opportunities extremely difficult to come by in 2022/23, though, and has played just four minutes in all competitions.

Wan-Bissaka’s cameo appearance off the substitute’s bench against Liverpool is his only outing this season, indicating an imminent exit could be on the cards.

What has Jones said about Wan-Bissaka?

Jones believes that Wan-Bissaka’s move to United ‘hasn’t gone to plan’ and that he will now have to contemplate starting afresh elsewhere to revive his stuttering career.

In an interview with GiveMeSport: “As a player, you have to push yourself to the limit, and when Wan-Bissaka moved it was a significant transfer that should have been a great moment.

“It hasn’t gone to plan amid all the changes at the club, and now he is seriously having to consider a transfer.”

Has Wan-Bissaka been harshly treated?

Wan-Bissaka’s defensive abilities have rarely been called into question throughout his career, and his underlying numbers illustrate why.

As per FBref, the right-back has ranked in the 98th percentile for blocks and interceptions and the 82nd for tackles amongst his positional peers over the last year.

However, Wan-Bissaka is far less effective in the final third of the pitch and has registered just 12 goal contributions in 127 appearances for United.

In Ten Hag’s system, the full-backs are expected to provide attacking impetus from out wide, something Wan-Bissaka struggles to do, and is likely the main reason why Diogo Dalot is United’s preferred option in that position.
