£375k-a-week star ‘could now sign new contract’ at Old Trafford

Manchester United star David De Gea could commit his long-term future to the club by signing a new contract at Old Trafford, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The goalkeeper has been on the Red Devils’ books for more than a decade, having completed an £18.9million switch from Atletico Madrid in 2011, but there are doubts over whether he will be on board for much longer.

What’s the latest news involving De Gea?

Although De Gea’s £375,000-per-week contract is due to expire next summer, Manchester United boast an option to extend the agreement by 12 months.

But there are doubts over whether the Red Devils will take advantage of the caveat written into the 31-year-old’s deal as it is understood that their wage bill reached a Premier League record £384million for last season and their financial situation will dictate how they act.

Speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast, Laurie Whitwell has revealed that De Gea is desperate to remain at Old Trafford and open to discussing a new contract on reduced terms.

Away from Manchester United, the shot-stopper was hit with a heavy blow at international level last week and his World Cup hopes appear to be in tatters.

Spain boss Luis Enrique has put together a 55-man provisional squad list ahead of heading to Qatar later this month and De Gea has reportedly been overlooked despite five goalkeepers being selected.

What has Dean Jones said about De Gea?

Jones was impressed with De Gea’s performance as Manchester United overcame West Ham United last weekend.

Despite speculation over his future, the transfer insider believes the former Atletico Madrid man could pen a new long-term contract.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “He has been through a lot at United. I think he is probably relishing this moment, to be honest.

“He has a new manager and has a new challenge which he is rising to. He put in a massive performance at the weekend.

“A lot of people have been wondering if he is on his way out, but I’m now wondering whether he might actually end up signing a new contract.”

Should Manchester United hand De Gea a new contract?

While there are doubts over whether De Gea will remain at Manchester United beyond the end of the season, it is clear that he is still one of the first names on the team sheet under Erik ten Hag, who took over as the club’s boss following the conclusion of last season.

He has not missed a single minute of action since the campaign got underway and also kept a host of clean sheets.

However, De Gea has also made some calamitous errors along the way, including during the 4-0 defeat to Brentford.

While that may be the case, he has been a wonderful servant at Old Trafford and chalked up more than 500 appearances.

If the 45-cap Spain international is willing to remain at the club on reduced terms, Manchester United would be wise to put a new contract on the table.
