The Old Trafford faithful are split in opinion over Ruben Amorim’s appointment. In full voice, some are chanting his name from the terraces while others are confused – and thus, running out of patience – by the Libson-born 40-year-old’s tactical approach.
Replacing Erik ten Hag at the helm of Manchester United, the Portuguese wanted to wait until the summer to depart Sporting CP and join the Red Devils – but, according to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS-led team, it was simple: now or never.
Amorim, thus, joined in November 2024, and it’s not unfair to say that things haven’t gone swimmingly since. Getting into a Europa League final aside, the league form has been abysmal – and in the event that he gets the sack, Sportcasting have accumulated a list of potential replacements and their respective odds.
20-16
Thomas Tuchel, Oliver Glasner, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick, Luis Enrique
Kicking off proceedings is England boss Thomas Tuchel, who was linked with a move to Old Trafford pre-Amorim. The German – just the third non-Englishman to take over the Three Lions job – has odds of 18/1, but it seems unlikely given that he has the 2026 World Cup coming up.
Oliver Glasner of Crystal Palace and former Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solksjaer are also among the names that could succeed Amorim should the Manchester United higher-ups choose to go down another route. Both managers are given odds of 16/1.
Michael Carrick enjoyed a three-match caretaker stint for the club in between November and December 2021 – and could be in line for a return after impressing in the Middlesbrough dugout. He’s young, exciting and has an immediate link to Old Trafford proceedings.
Paris Saint-Germain’s Luis Enrique, 55, is widely regarded as one of the best managers in world football – and there are very few clubs that wouldn’t want him at their helmsman. He has an uncanny knack of juicing up squads and getting the best out of them.

Julian Nagelsmann, Andoni Iraola, Xabi Alonso, Simone Inzaghi, Max Allegri
Germany custodian Julian Nagelsmann is, like the aforementioned Carrick, young and exciting – and the 37-year-old shares the same odds as Andoni Iraola of Bournemouth does (16/1). The latter is also linked to the Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City jobs.
Xabi Alonso is up for grabs after Bayer Leverkusen announced that he’d be leaving at the end of the season. A midfield technician at his pomp, a move to Real Madrid post-Carlo Ancelotti (more on him later!) seems inevitable, though, doesn’t it?

This summer will no doubt prove to be another crucial one in Real Madrid’s glorious history.
Simone Inzaghi of Inter Milan has become ever-so sought-after following his side’s run to the Champions League final. He plays a three-back system, too, but whether that’s a positive would be decided on a fan-by-fan basis. The out-of-work Massimiliano Allegri also boasts odds of 14/1.

Carlo Ancelotti, Unai Emery, Mauricio Pochettino, Brendan Rodgers, Marco Silva
As mentioned, we’re now onto Ancelotti. As decorated as managers come, the wily Italian – commonly admired as one of the best football managers of all time – will be a free agent in the summer and, therefore, could be on Ratcliffe’s radar as a serial winner.
Unai Emery would need no time to adapt to the trials and tribulations of Premier League life given his success at Villa Park with Aston Villa. The talented Spaniard has been given odds of 12/1 – but his side’s project is, at face value, much more promising.

Taking their respective careers into account and how many major trophies they’ve won, Ruben Amorim is above Arne Slot.
The same point stands for Marco Silva of Fulham. Having spent, as things stand, 182 matches in charge of the west Londoners – a stint which succeeded spells at Everton and Watford – the 47-year-old is, understandably, an attractive prospect.
Sandwiched in between the two Premier League managers are USMNT’s Mauricio Pochettino and Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, who are both priced at 12/1. Of course, both have experienced English top flight management before, but whether they’d make a return is unknown.

Xavi Hernandez, Thomas Frank, Gareth Southgate, Kieran McKenna, Jose Mourinho
Now onto the five managers who have a great chance of becoming the next to (try and) emulate Sir Alex Ferguson’s trophy-winning exploits: and first up is ex-Barcelona man Xavi Hernandez, who has been given odds of 10/1. He’d be attainable given that he is, currently, out of work.
Thomas Frank, currently of Brentford, has been lauded for the job he’s done in the capital – from Championship status to a regular, hard-to-beat side in the Premier League – and the impressive Dane is always linked to a position at a so-called ‘bigger club’.

From Pep Guardiola to David Moyes, all current Premier League managers have been ranked from best to worst.
Tottenham Hotspur-linked Frank has been given odds of 9/1 and is followed by Gareth Southgate, who was sacked by the Football Association (FA) after failing to win the Euro 2024 final against Spain. Adding to that, INEOS’ admiration of the former defender is no secret.
A return for Kieran McKenna is being placed at 7/1 and then – believe it or not – Jose Mourinho, currently at the helm of Fenerbahce is the odds-on favourite to replace his compatriot Amorim. At 4/1, the Portuguese could complete a sensational return to the Theatre of Dreams – but it would seem, from an outsider’s perspective, a step in the wrong direction.
