With a busy schedule on the horizon, the WWE will want to ensure that Backlash doesn’t feel like a filler show before they move on to Saturday Night’s Main Event in two weeks. A typical Triple H show, with five matches announced for the card, a variety of encounters have been built towards over the past few weeks of programming.

A PLE for after WrestleMania, this is all the known information about WWE’s Backlash PLE.

John Cena vs. Randy Orton

Undisputed WWE Championship

In what is sure to be the main event of the night, John Cena’s first title defence will come at the hands of one of his greatest rivals, Randy Orton. Wrestling in his hometown of St. Louis, the Viper will be hoping to achieve a 15th reign as World Champion, facing the heel Champ as a face in what is a stark contrast to their previous encounters.

A bout that is being marketed as ‘One Last Time’, the WWE Universe isn’t expecting an in-ring masterclass from two ageing legends, but it will be an emotional farewell encounter between two pillars of the programme. With the leader of the Cenation likely to retain and continue his record-breaking reign, it will make for nostalgic viewing.

Pat McAfee vs. Gunther

Singles Match

It was only three short weeks ago that Gunther lost his World Heavyweight Championship to Jey Uso. Originally earmarked for a breakaway following a successful reign as a World Champion, it wasn’t to be with the Ring General taking his frustrations out on a unique opponent.

When the Austrian lost, his defeat was commentated by Pat McAfee, alongside other names. A former NFL player, McAfee isn’t shy about stepping foot in the ring. Having had matches on NXT and at WrestleMania, his next encounter will be against Gunther. An unusual match for the former World Champion to be forming in, it is an intriguing battle nonetheless that will be sure to entertain.

Lyra Valkyria vs. Becky Lynch

Women’s Intercontinental Championship

Two of WWE’s best European wrestlers, Becky Lynch and Lyra Valkyria, have had a tumultuous time over the past weeks. From returning on the Grandest Stage of Them All to winning the Women’s Tag Team Championships on the same night, it took the Lasskicker all but 24 hours to drastically change the course of her character.

Losing the tag belts on the Raw after Mania, Lynch took her anger out on Valkyria and turned heel. The pair have since gone toe-to-toe on the microphone, with Valkyria proving she has what it takes to compete with a future Hall of Famer. With many expecting a title change, it is a guarantee that the pair will leave with match-of-the-night suggestions.

Jacob Fatu vs. LA Knight vs. Drew McIntyre vs. Damian Priest

United States Championship Match

With WrestleMania 41 having had a curious amount of multi-competitor matches, Triple H has managed to find time for only one on the Backlash PLE. A match that will see new United States Champion Jacob Fatu defending his belt against LA Knight, Damian Priest and Drew McIntyre, the encounter puts two WrestleMania matches together in what will be a must-watch four-way.

With Priest and McIntyre having been at each other’s throats for a while, and the same for Fatu and Knight, they have all united in their common goal of having gold around their waist. With the Samoan Werewolf expected to have a bright future, this match offers Fatu a fantastic chance to cement his reign as legitimate by defeating three worthy opponents.

Dominik Mysterio vs. Penta

Intercontinental Championship

The third match, which will feature a first title defence for a titleholder, new-found fan-favourite act Dominik Mysterio, will be putting his Intercontinental Championship on the line against Penta. Two hugely popular acts, Penta has been on a roll ever since his debut with the company in January. Having missed out on winning the title at WrestleMania, he will be hoping the reduction from three opponents to one will aid his chances of victory.

For Mysterio, his improvement continues to impress the WWE Universe. Having gone from one of WWE’s most booed acts to one of the most popular wrestlers, the son of Rey Mysterio will be hoping to leave Backlash with the title still around his waist.
