Worth, Weight and Who Keeps It

English football’s most prestigious prize, the Premier League, boasts some of the best teams in the world and some of the best players the game has to offer too. Ever since the revamp in 1992, the top-flight has played host to some of the greatest rivalries in modern football, from battles between Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United and Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal, to much more recently with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

The honour of winning the Premier League is as big as it ever has been, with the sheer hard work and commitment needed to triumph over a long arduous season of 38 games making sure only the absolute best can run out as winners come the end of the season. As Liverpool – in Arne Slot’s debut campaign at Anfield no less – look to lift the title at the end of the 2024/2025 season, it’s worth asking just how much the Premier League trophy is actually worth.

What is the Premier League Trophy Made of

Firstly, to distinguish how much the Premier League trophy is worth, it’s important to consider its dimensions, weight and the material used to make it. Standing at a height of 3ft 5in and 2ft wide, the trophy weighs around 25.4kg in total. The base – which is where the names of the league’s champions are engraved – constitutes 15.9kg of that weight.

The base is made from an element called ‘malachite’, which is a vibrant green copper carbonate hydroxide material, and is generally used for gemstones and decorative material – in this instance of the Premier League trophy, the green hue because of it is meant to represent a football pitch. The main body of the trophy though, is made from a combination of sterling silver and 24-carat silver gilt.

Given the materials used, it’s no surprise that the Premier League trophy is perhaps not as valuable as one might expect. According to a study done by The Gold Bullion, the trophy’s use of sterling silver means that it is worth £18,796. While it still features on the list of the most valuable sports trophies in the world, it pales into comparison with the World Cup (which is almost exclusively comprised of gold), the Ballon d’Or award and the Ryder Cup.

Premier League fans can circle the date on their calendars.

Indeed, The Gold Bullion have suggested that had the Premier League trophy been made out of solid gold instead, then its value would have shot up to an astonishing £1,479,296.

Who Keeps the Premier League Trophy

While the Premier League trophy is fought for all season, unfortunately for the winners, they do not get to keep it for the entirety of the campaign. Instead, they must return it three weeks before the final league game of the season. However, there are two identical trophies that are made, with one being kept with the current champions, and the other being used by the Premier League for media and other promotional events.

Only Arsenal, during their ‘Invincibles’ season in the 2003/2004 campaign, were handed a mini-golden trophy to keep to commemorate their achievements, but other than that, all instances from the Premier League era has seen the team eventually return the prize that they won.
