After this week’s DFB Pokal elimination sent VfL Wolfsburg spiraling deeper into crisis, the Bundesliga outfit had more bad news to confirm on Thursday. Versatile Danish fullback/winger Joakim Maehle will be sidelined indefinitely. No precise diagnosis on Maehle’s shoulder injury was given by the Lower Saxon club, but one can easily assume that Maehle won’t be back before the November international break.
Maehle displaced rising German left back Aaron Zehnter to start under Wolfsburg head coach on five occasions between matchdays three and seven. Zehnter returned to the starting XI in both this weekend’s narrow league win over Hamburger SV and Tuesday’s cup loss. The 20-year-old had his issues in both matches and was booked in Tuesday’s defeat.
Wolfsburg face another top flight team tossed out of Germany’s domestic cup in the second round this weekend in the Bundesliga. Though Christian Ilzer’s TSG 1899 Hoffenheim too weren’t able to prevail against FC St. Pauli, the Kraichgauer guests can be considered heavy favorites to send Simonis’ team to yet another humiliating home defeat.
