Why Oscar de la Hoya Casts Suspicion on Canelo’s Boxing Coach

Boxing promoter and legendary former fighter Oscar de la Hoya did not hold back in his latest edition of ‘Clapback Thursday’ in which he targets anyone and everyone who he feels like criticizing.

The Golden Boy Promotions founder, this week, targeted a fighter he used to represent, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, together with the Mexican phenom’s long-time coach and manager, Eddy Reynoso.

Canelo and Reynoso have been in the news recently because the fighter takes on Terence Crawford in a pound-for-pound boxing battle at a marquee Las Vegas event in September on the huge platform Netflix. Additionally, Reynoso is under fire because a sixth fighter of his, this time Jaime Munguia, tested positive for a banned substance.

Munguia’s test result raises concerns about Reynoso’s camp in general, de la Hoya said, hinting that the whole situation should be deemed “suspicious.”

Canelo’s Long-time Coach Eddy Reynoso ‘Suspicious’

That’s according to Oscar de la Hoya

With the Munguia news, there are now six fighters in total from Reynoso’s gym who have tested positive for a banned substance, or another, including Canelo himself, Julio Cesar Martinez, Oscar Valdez, Ryan Garcia, and Luis Nery.

“Six of Eddy Reynoso’s fighters have tested positive for PEDs,” de la Hoya said during a no-holds-barred, six-minute rant he posted Thursday on X, formerly Twitter.

“The latest being Jaime Munguia two weeks ago. Six fighters and nobody is questioning this? This doesn’t seem suspicious or out of the ordinary to you? We just accept the explanation that everybody is eating tainted meat? Come on.”

“Doesn’t this warrant an investigation into Eddy’s camps? I’ve known Jaime for over 10 years and he always tested clean, up until his last camp with Eddy and his fight in Riyadh,” de la Hoya said. “How is it ethical you have six fighters testing dirty in the same camp?”

When talking about the Canelo-Crawford fight of the year, de la Hoya said such status being attached to the show is “laughable” because Crawford is “jumping two weight classes” just to fight Canelo, who de la Hoya claimed is a “natural light heavyweight.”

For de la Hoya, the result is a foregone conclusion because Canelo will simply run Crawford “out of the ring.”

The Canelo vs Crawford super-fight is scheduled for September and will air on Netflix. The fight will take place during the day, according to de la Hoya, “to accommodate UFC Noche on a different network.”
