The Champions League

Why has Diego Simeone left out João Félix again?

On Saturday, Diego Simeone praised Ángel Correa after his brace against Girona. Atlético were far from their best in the 2-1 win at the Metropolitano but the Argentine forward came to their rescue with goals at the beginning of each half.

For tonight’s Champions League game against Club Brugge, Simeone has gone with Correa and Griezmann in attack in a must-win game for the Spanish club. João Félix starts another game on the bench and Simeone is not the only one that has questioned the Portuguese attacker. In the win over Girona, the home supporters whistled the former Benfica player when he came on in the second half.

Tonight, Félix is expected to make an appearance in the second half but this is not what Atlético paid €127m for. It will be the fourth game in a row that the 22-year-old has started on the bench for Los Colchoneros.

Many Atlético fans are perhaps fed up with the fact that the most talented player in the squad has not yet turned into the player he is supposed to be.

Simeone knows he can depend on Correa and tonight he needs the diminutive forward more than ever. Correa is not as talented as Félix but he has everything that Simeone and the fans love, something that can be summed up in one word: commitment.

Félix has not scored a goal in 11 games, while three of Atlético’s forwards have at least three goals (Antoine Griezmann and Correa) and Spain international Álvaro Morata has netted on four occasions.

In 588 minutes of football this season, João Félix has provided three assists and scored no goals. It can only be frustrating for the player himself and Simeone, who has not seen the best from his side yet.
