West Ham United have reached an agreement to sign Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes, who is set to undergo a medical.

The Hammers are pushing for late signings in the summer transfer window after such a disappointing start to the 2025/2026 season. West Ham’s latest defeat will have been cause for major concern. Although losing to Chelsea wouldn’t have been a huge surprise, being defeated 5-1 at home will have been a major worry for the capital club.

The transfer window closes in just a few days time, and there’s no doubt Graham Potter will be desperate to see new additions through the door. Adding a new midfielder is likely to be a priority, and they’ve been pushing to bring Fernandes to the club from Southampton, who were relegated to the Championship last season.

Reporting on X, journalist Mike McGrath has confirmed that West Ham appear to have reached an agreement with Southampton to sign Fernandes. The Portuguese midfielder is set to undergo a medical with the Hammers.

Fernandes was a standout player for Southampton during the 2024/2025 season, despite their disastrous campaign, which saw them finish bottom of the Premier League. After the Saints were relegated, it was always going to be difficult for them to convince Fernandes to stay at the club, and West Ham appear to be the ones who have capitalised.

The Portuguese midfielder is capable of playing in a deeper role, dictating play and driving with the ball from deep, but he could also feature in an attacking midfield position.
