Germany got off to a terrible start in their World Cup qualifying campaign, losing their opener 2-0 to Slovakia.

Former German international Bastian Schweinsteiger, appearing as a pundit for ARD, was far from impressed with what he saw and believed Slovakia were deserving winners.

“The Slovaks played really well and defended excellently. The German team lacked ideas, conviction, and spirit. At no point did I feel that we could win the game. We completely deserved to lose,” said Schweinsteiger.

“This is a tough setback! It was really bad we posed no threat, showed no body language. I’m sorry, but in that case, you have to be happy if you even qualify for the World Cup. For me, that was not the German national team today.”

Northern Ireland and Luxembourg are also part of Germany’s World Cup qualifying group.
