WCW Legend Diamond Dallas Page Named the ‘Four Greatest Workers in Wrestling History’

Summary

  • WCW once challenged WWE’s dominance with iconic stars like Goldberg and Ric Flair.
  • DDP named four wrestlers as the greatest in-ring wrestlers in history.
  • The quartet acknowledged by DDP revolutionized wrestling with their unparalleled skills and legacies.

The WWE’s position as professional wrestling’s number-one company has rarely been challenged, but a handful of names have attempted to change the course of history. More recently, All Elite Wrestling has offered wrestling fans an enjoyable sports-like alternative, but their position as wrestling’s number two came after a lengthy spell with no viable competitor.

Famously, WWE’s biggest rival was World Championship Wrestling (WCW), a short-lived brand that aired on TBS, similar to AEW nowadays. As WWE’s product continued to reach new lows, WCW capitalised on the lull and took over. Taking stars from the WWE and creating their own household names, the Ted Turner-backed product featured a litany of iconic names.

From Goldberg to Ric Flair, some of professional wrestling’s greatest names banded together on WCW, helping the show defeat Monday Night Raw in the Monday Night Wars for 83 weeks straight. A more underrated name in the history books but a legend regardless, Diamond Dallas Paige was an integral part of WCW’s success.

Nowadays, spending his time aiding the legends of yesteryear into living comfortable lives, DDP’s work inside the ring and outside the ring has earned him the respect of his fellow wrestlers and fans all over the globe. Speaking in 2022, DPP revealed who he believed to be the four greatest in-ring wrestlers in history, and it is an intriguing quartet.

The WCW Legend had a mixed bag of answers

DDP - Diamond Dallas Paige

The debate around the greatest wrestler of all time is a never-ending conversation. With many facets contributing towards the discourse, it is up to each fan as to how they grade a wrestler based on their preferences. With some preferring a more charismatic, melodramatic character, other fans seek out fantastic in-ring athletes for their fix of wrestling.

Taking to his DDP Snake Pit podcast in 2022, a podcast hosted by himself and Jake Roberts, the populariser of the Diamond Cutter named four legends of the industry on his Mount Rushmore of in-ring wrestlers. Giving a shoutout to his co-host, DDP followed up with three unarguable inclusions, transcribed by Wrestling Inc.

“My first guy is gonna be [Jake Roberts]. Next guy for me is definitely going to be Ric Flair. Ric Flair made me want to watch wrestling after Jake pulled me back in … Shawn Michaels, you know, he’s the first guy to break that ‘under six-foot’ thing and be able to be like Randy [Savage] was … Eddie Guerrero, I think as far as the working in the ring, goes back to me doing stuff for AAA in Mexico with me and Jake. He was an amazing talent then, and he only got better.”

It is hard to argue with DDP’s list, with the four aforementioned men being some of the greatest in-ring talents the squared circle has witnessed. Names such as Shawn Michaels, Eddie Guerrero and Ric Flair are always thrown about during G.O.A.T. discourse, but it is Jake Roberts’ inclusion that will raise eyebrows.

One of the many names that DDP has helped get back to full fitness, or as close to that as possible, Roberts often gets overlooked during debates surrounding the business’ best. Having experienced wrestling in several companies, Roberts’ unique appearance, which was him carrying around a python, combined with his fantastic mic and in-ring work, led him to become a deserved WWE Hall of Famer in 2014.

Shawn Michaels and Ric Flair are often synonymous with one another. Often because of the iconic retirement match they produced, one of the greatest WWE matches, usually it is because they are the undisputed two greatest in-ring wrestlers. Able to perform to lofty standards regardless of being a face or a heel, their ability to make the most of every move and make the combat feel real is second to none. Both trailblazers for future generations, their legacies in the business remain.

The last name mentioned by DDP was Eddie Guerrero. Another name that was just as good when performing as a good guy as a bad guy, the late great Latino Heat’s unfortunately short-lived career remains timeless. A joy to watch in the ring, his unique athleticism and daredevil commitment brought, and still brings joy to fans all over the globe.
