At UFC 302 last summer, Dustin Poirier was given one last shot at UFC lightweight gold, and while he did a lot better than people expected him to do against Islam Makhachev, who many people consider the best pound-for-pound fighter in MMA today, ‘The Diamond’ was submitted in the fifth round. For weeks leading up to the fight, Poirier was teasing retirement whether he won, drew or lost, however, after months of consideration, he decided he would have one more fight.
It has been reported and rumoured for a while that Poirier will have an entire event built around him and his retirement this summer in his home state of Louisiana, but given the current state of the UFC’s lightweight division, the UFC seem to have been taking their time in selecting a retirement opponent for ‘The Diamond.’ If UFC legend Chael Sonnen’s reporting is to be believed, the UFC finally have an opponent locked in to face Poirier, and it would fit the requirement he has been asking for, which is “legends only.”

Chael Sonnen Leaks Dustin Poirier vs Max Holloway 3
The two UFC legends look set to face off against each other for the BMF title this summer
According to UFC legend Chael Sonnen, former UFC featherweight champion and current BMF champion, Max Holloway will be Dustin Poirier’s opponent for his retirement fight, which will take place at some point this summer. The UFC Hall of Famer, Sonnen, leaked the news during a newly released episode of Good Guy/Bad Guy, where he and his co-host Daniel Cormier were joined by ‘The Diamond.’
Poirier’s retirement fight has been rumoured to take place in his home state of Louisiana this summer, and while it is not clear yet as to whether the event will be a Fight Night or a pay-per-view, it seems Holloway vs Poirier will be the main event. Below you can see the clip where Sonnen leaked the news, and while it didn’t get confirmed by ‘The Diamond’ himself, he didn’t deny it either.
“155 (lightweight) only has one piece of clarity, which is that Dustin (Poirier) and Max (Holloway) are matched up.”
There may be some slight pushback on Holloway vs Poirier from the MMA community as the fight has already happened twice, however, when you put two fighters who are as skilled and entertaining as ‘Blessed’ and ‘The Diamond,’ you are guaranteed an absolute barnburner each and every time they face off.

Max Holloway Fought Dustin Poirier in his UFC Debut
Poirier won the fight via first-round submission
As mentioned previously, Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier’s showdown this summer will be the third time the two have faced each other in the UFC. In their most recent fight, Poirier won via unanimous decision to become the interim UFC lightweight champion, and in their first fight, which just so happened to be Holloway’s UFC debut, Poirier also won that, but via first-round submission.
The fact that both Holloway and Poirier are still competing at such a high level over 13 years after their first fight shows just how good both men are.
