Tottenham officials could make ‘massive’ transfer call at Hotspur Way

Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to “go massive” with their spending in the January transfer window, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GIVEMESPORT.

It comes after the north Londoners spent just under £150 million to bring eight players to the club in the summer.

Following a mixed start to the campaign Tottenham began 2023 badly, having suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa on New Year’s Day. That reverse left Antonio Conte’s side in fifth and outside out of the Champions League places for the first time this season.

Rectifying Tottenham’s shaky first half of the season will be Conte’s main focus in 2023, but it could prove the Italian manager’s last act in charge of Spurs with his contract set to expire in the summer. Having returned Spurs to the Champions League in his first season with the club there had been hopes a full pre-season schedule may have given Conte the time to shape a side capable of challenging for the title, yet it appears Tottenham’s trophy drought could extend for another season.

It’s now 15 years since Tottenham last won silverware, defeating Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup final – a competition Spurs have already been knocked out of this term. It means Tottenham remain in three competitions heading into the new year, but as rank outsiders for the Premier League and Champions League, the FA Cup is likely their only realistic option.

With contract talks ongoing between Conte and Spurs, the pair could reach a stalemate if neither party is able to commit to the other’s terms. It’s reported that Conte is likely to see how much club officials back him in the January window before he commits to signing a long-term deal at Hotspur Way, but the chances of Spurs spending big remain slim.

What’s Jones said about Tottenham and the January window?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, transfer insider Jones expressed hesitancy when discussing if Spurs’ chances of a busy window.

“If you look back to last January, they did end up signing Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski,” Jones told GMS.

“That was pretty significant, so that might be a sign of good things to come.

“Obviously Conte wants big input [in the January window], but given what the board is thinking right now I don’t think they’ll go massive on it.”

Who might Tottenham bring in during the January window?

Even if Tottenham don’t break the bank in January, there are expectations around some arrivals with a report in the Times suggesting Spurs could welcome up to three new arrivals.

It’s suggested Conte is eyeing up a new midfielder, a right wing-back and an attacker this month, as he plots a route back into the Champions League positions.

One man linked with a move to north London is Sporting CP’s Pedro Porro, who has impressed for the Portuguese side. According to the Daily Star, Porro, who featured both home and away against Spurs in this season’s Champions League, would cost Tottenham £35 million in the January window.
