Tottenham could lure £30m Frenchman with Champions League football

Tottenham Hotspur may be able to ‘put a more interesting proposition’ to Martin Terrier than Newcastle United, according to French football expert Jonathan Johnson.

The Rennes forward has been linked with several Premier League outfits in recent months and could seek pastures new in January after missing out on France’s World Cup squad.

What is the latest news involving Terrier?

90min have claimed that ‘nearly half the Premier League’ have scouted Terrier during the current campaign due to his outstanding form both domestically and in Europe.

It’s stated that the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle, Leeds, Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa have all run the rule over the former France Under-21 international.

However, Tottenham may also be in the mix after Footmercato (via The Mirror) stated back in May that the capital club were among Terrier’s admirers and that an offer was being readied.

The 25-year-old ended up staying at the Roazhon Park, though, and has continued to go from strength to strength in the current campaign.

In the previous transfer window, The Athletic’s Phil Hay disclosed that Rennes valued their prized asset at around £30 million, and that figure is only likely to have increased since.

What has Johnson said about Terrier?

When asked if the likes of Newcastle could snap up Terrier ahead of Tottenham, Johnson informed GiveMeSport that ‘playing in the Champions League’ should work in the capital club’s favour.

He said: “I think that there are other clubs who might perhaps be able to put a more interesting proposition to him in terms of immediate involvement in top-level European football.

“So, if Spurs were to come back with some interest, for example, I think the potential of going and playing in the Champions League with them might sway his opinion.”

Would Terrier be a good signing?

Last season, Terrier established himself as one of the deadliest finishes in Ligue 1, registering 21 goals and seven assists in 46 appearances across all competitions for Rennes.

And the forward, who is capable of lining up on the left-wing or upfront, has carried that form over into the current campaign.

Terrier has found the back of the net on 11 occasions in his 20 outings throughout 2022/23, setting up four further strikes for his teammates to fire Rennes to third place in Ligue 1.

The versatile star has the potential to be a valuable asset to Antonio Conte and Tottenham and could easily have worked his way back onto their radar.
