Ten Hag ‘urgently wants’ new forward at Old Trafford

Manchester United are now looking at other striking options as a case of urgency after Ajax raised the asking price for Antony, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Erik ten Hag has been putting his mark on the Red Devils this summer ahead of the 2022-23 campaign but plenty of twists and turns are set to take place before the transfer window slams shut on September 1.

What is the latest transfer news from Old Trafford?

Ten Hag has added three new faces to his squad since his appointment as manager, with Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia making the move to the North West.

However, plenty of work still needs to be done. Cristiano Ronaldo has told the club he wants to leave this summer, meaning the hunt for attacking reinforcements is now on.

Ajax ace Antony has reportedly been identified as a priority having shone under Ten Hag at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

The Dutch champions previously set a £62 million asking price on the Brazilian but they now appear to be effectively blocking a deal after upping the figure to £84 million.

It is a situation that has seemingly left the Red Devils scrambling for alternative options.

What has Jones said about the pursuit of Antony?

Jones understands that finding an alternative to the 22-year-old, stating that Ajax are attempting to block a potential transfer.

The transfer insider told GIVEMESPORT: “Man Utd are on the lookout for another forward, almost as a case of urgency now. They are definitely improving but they need another option to give them a spark in the front line. Ajax are trying to price Antony out of a move so let’s see what the backups are that they consider.”

What should United do next in the transfer window?

With the club not in a position to splash out on Antony’s new asking price, as things stand, they need to identify some attainable targets and fast.

There remains a possibility that the player himself could attempt to force a move through himself but with three years remaining on his contract, that does not seem to be too feasible either.

As things stand, Anthony Martial looks set to start for Ten Hag’s side against Brighton on Sunday after impressing in pre-season.

But given how underwhelming United’s attack was last season, reinforcements are surely required in the area moving forward.
