Ten Hag now ‘wants’ 19-cap ‘pressing monster’ at Old Trafford

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag ‘wants’ Burnley striker Wout Weghorst to sign at Old Trafford this January, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook has told GiveMeSport.

The 30-year-old appears to be on the verge of making a temporary switch to United despite already being halfway through a season-long loan spell at Besiktas.

Manchester United transfer news – Weghorst

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that United have reached a ‘full verbal agreement’ to sign Weghorst on a deal that will keep him at the club for the remainder of the campaign.

The Red Devils will have to pay Besiktas around €3 million (£2.6m) to prize him away from the Vodafone Park as Burnley did not include a recall option in his original loan deal.

Romano states that the final obstacle holding up the potential move is the fact the Turkish giants need to find a replacement before they are willing to sanction Weghorst’s departure, and they have been linked with Vincent Aboubakar.

Weghorst is being lined up as Cristiano Ronaldo’s heir following his departure during the World Cup and will provide cover and competition to the likes of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.

What has Crook said about Weghorst?

Crook has stated that United are having to be ‘creative’ this winter due to their financial restraints, but that Ten Hag is still genuinely keen to sign Weghorst.

In an interview with GMS, he said: “Not the name that I think we’d have come up with on a list of targets at the start of the month, but Ten Hag wants him.

“There’s obviously not a lot of money to spend all the time, the club is up for sale, so they’re going to have to be a bit creative.”

How good is Weghorst?

Weghorst may have been disappointing during his six-month spell with Burnley, scoring just twice in his 20 appearances for the Clarets, but he has been successful everywhere else in his career.

The 19-cap Netherlands international has been labelled a ‘pressing monster’ by journalist Scott Saunders, an aspect of his game not everyone is familiar with, and his goalscoring record speaks for itself.

After registering 45 goals and 13 assists in 86 appearances for AZ Alkmaar, Weghorst then found the back of the net on 70 occasions in 144 outings for Wolfsburg, setting up 22 strikes for his teammates.

It’s not hard to understand why Ten Hag has identified his compatriot as an ideal short-term solution to United’s woes upfront, therefore, and he could prove to be a successful acquisition at Old Trafford.
