Manchester United and Erik ten Hag are “big fans” of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, but a deal to bring him to Old Trafford remains “quiet”, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Red Devils have begun the restart of the Premier League season in fine fettle, securing victories against both Nottingham Forest and Wolves in their first two games.

That has seen them leap into the top four of the Champions League, and with the January transfer window now open, attentions firmly towards who Ten Hag could look to bring in, with De Jong once again a prominent name.

Man Utd Transfer News – Frenkie de Jong

The Netherlands international was of course the subject of much speculation over the summer, with reports from The Athletic back in July suggesting United and Barcelona had reached an agreement over the midfielder.

Despite both sides seemingly willing to see a deal get over the line, De Jong stayed put at the Camp Nou, and the 25-year-old has now established himself as a vital part of Xavi’s side this season, playing in 14 games in La Liga and missing just the one through a muscle injury, as per Transfermarkt.

While the former Ajax star has become a mainstay in the team, that hasn’t stopped rumours swirling that he could still be on the move in the near future.

What did Romano say about De Jong to Man Utd?

Now, Romano has delivered an update on where things currently stand between all parties as we begin the early days of the January transfer window.

He said: “At the moment the situation is really quiet. Man Utd are big fans of him and so is Erik ten Hag, but at the moment there are no negotiations with Frenkie, with his agent or with Barcelona. So everything is absolutely quiet.”

De Jong and Casemiro would be perfect Man Utd midfield

Having already brought in Casemiro in the summer from Real Madrid, Ten Hag could add another proven performer on the biggest stage in his fellow Dutchman, De Jong.

Wayne Rooney - Manchester United

Which year did Wayne Rooney leave Manchester United?

The Netherlands star has played in 37 Champions League games over the course of his career, and was part of the Ajax team that reached the semi-final stage just a few years ago – his displays in that competition no doubt prompting Barcelona to shell out to sign him in the summer.

Dubbed as “world-class” by sports writer and commentator, Andy West, the midfielder could form an exciting partnership in the engine room alongside Casemiro, with one the destroyer and the latter the play-maker.

As per Whoscored, De Jong is in the top ten for most passes per game in La Liga this season, while he figures in the top 20 for pass accuracy – both statistics hovering around the 90% mark, and comfortably higher than anyone in the current Manchester United midfield.

Valued at £45m by Transfermarkt, the Dutchman could be the kind of signing that gives United an extra lift in their pursuit of Champions League football this season.
