Stuttgart in discussions to appoint Jess Thorup as Pellegrino Matarazzo successor

As Stuttgart search the market for a successor to Pellegrino Matarazzo, Jess Thorup has now emerged as a leading candidate. According to Stuttgarter Nachrichten, the 52-year-old is already in the city ahead of further discussions on Sunday and Monday.

Most recently head coach of Copenhagen, Thorup was dismissed due to their poor start in the Danish Superliga season. Per the report, the Danish coach speaks good German and is good at developing talent, two desirables that Stuttgart are searching for in their successor to Matarazzo, who was dismissed after failing to win in the Bundesliga this season.

“We need a coach who can develop but above all, who gets the team ready to win,” said sporting director Sven Mislintat. Also on VfB’s list of candidates was Zsolt Lőw and Sebastian Hoeneß, both of whom rejected the role.

In charge of Stuttgart on an interim basis until a successor is appointed, Michael Wimmer guided VfB to their first Bundesliga win of the season on Saturday, beating Bochum 4-1.
