Steele to continue as Verbruggen’s backup after signing new Brighton deal

Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Jason Steele has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until June 2027.

The agreement extends the veteran’s stay on the south coast to nine years, having joined from Sunderland in 2018 after Brighton’s first Premier League campaign.

Steele, now 35, has made 60 appearances for the Seagulls and remains an important figure in the dressing room despite largely serving as backup to Bart Verbruggen.

Head coach Fabian Hurzeler praised the experienced shot-stopper’s professionalism, describing him as a key influence on and off the pitch.

He said Steele sets the tone for younger players in training and continues to uphold the standards that have helped Brighton establish themselves as a competitive top-flight side.

Steele has spent most of his time at Brighton as a dependable second-choice goalkeeper but has featured regularly during key periods.

Under former manager Roberto De Zerbi, he shared duties with Verbruggen throughout the 2023-24 season, including the club’s memorable run to the Europa League last 16.

The former Middlesbrough and Blackburn Rovers keeper has been widely regarded within the club for his leadership and calm presence, especially during Brighton’s rapid rise over the past six years.

His new deal reflects the trust and value the club place in his experience as part of a youthful and evolving squad.

Speaking after signing his extension, Steele said he was proud to continue his journey with the Seagulls and hopes to reach a decade at the club.

He described Brighton’s progress since his arrival as “incredible” and reaffirmed his belief that the current team can secure European football again this season.

Steele added that the environment created by Hurzeler and his staff has been key to maintaining high performance levels. He highlighted the healthy competition among goalkeepers as a major factor driving standards within the squad.

The veteran also reflected fondly on Brighton’s first European campaign two seasons ago, calling it a “brilliant experience” and one the players are eager to repeat.

With his new contract secured, Steele will continue to provide stability and mentorship behind Verbruggen as Brighton target another strong campaign in both domestic and European competitions.
