Sevilla vs Real Madrid Preview

Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan

LaLiga matchday 37 kicks off in Seville, with this game taking place a day earlier than all the others to allow Sevilla a bit more time to prepare for their UEFA Europa League Final which takes place next week. There’s likely to be rotation from both teams though after a full midweek matchday.

Sevilla are still in with a shot at 7th place in LaLiga which would deliver UEFA Conference League football should they fail to beat Roma next week. That’d be a nice safety net to have, but they are competing with four teams for one place and there is a scenario where they could win their last two league games and still miss out. That’s likely to be enough to convince José Luis Mendilibar that fully prioritising the Final is the right thing to do in terms of team selection here.

His side missed a good opportunity to win in midweek. Leading bottom club Elche 1-0 after only 10 minutes, everything was looking positive for what was a very strong Sevilla eleven. However a red card for Pape Gueye in just the 18th minute changed the course of the game and they could only draw meaning they head into this match in 10th rather than 7th.

For Real Madrid, this will be their first away game since the horrible racist abuse that was suffered by Vini Junior last weekend. They always get a hostile welcome here and the eyes of Spain and perhaps the wider football world were set to be on the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan to look out for any repeat of the abuse that has sadly followed the young Brazilian around this season.

However Vini is carrying a knock so Carlo Ancelotti will be without him again and the same may be true of a few other stars including Karim Benzema at the end of a long season where Real Madrid no longer have anything to play for besides a minor scrap with Atletico for 2nd place. They did win in midweek with Rodrygo’s late goal enough to see off Rayo Vallecano at home but Los Blancos have now lost all of their last 4 away games in all competitions.

Score Prediction: Sevilla 1-1 Real Madrid

With neither side likely to field their strongest elevens, this may not be the best game of football these two have ever contested. Sevilla will clearly have one eye on next week’s Final but their fans will want to give them a good send-off and they do still have something to play for, so we’re unlikely to see the hosts completely switch off here and they look capable of getting a result, especially given Real Madrid’s disappointing away form.
