Sevilla sporting director Monchi: “I believe the squad is now better than what it was in August.”

In a press conference that appeared on Marca, Sevilla’s sporting director, Monchi, commented on the club’s transfer window and their disappointing first half of the season.

“After making some mistakes during the summer, I believe the squad is now better than what it was in August. This has potentially been the transfer window we’ve dedicated the most time to,” Monchi said.

Considering Sevilla are currently sitting 13th in the league and have been knocked out of the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, the first half of the Andalusian club’s season is one of the worst in their recent history. This was addressed by Monchi:

“Last summer we made a lot of mistakes. Seeing us 17th or 18th in the table hurt a lot.”

Sevilla were in the relegation zone between November and January, and are currently only three points clear of Cádiz in 18th spot.

During the winter transfer window, the club let go of Thomas Delaney, Kasper Dolberg, and Ludwig Augistinsson. Isco departed as well after having his contract terminated. Loan signings Bryan Gil, Papa Gueye, and Loïc Badé have been brought in to boost the squad.

“If I see my model isn’t getting results, then someone who can do things better than me should be brought in. However, helping the team out of this situation motivates me because it’s a challenge I haven’t faced before. So I can’t say if I will be staying or not.

“I’m still the same as I was before. I always go down to the pitch, to the dressing room. I’m an atypical sporting director, I know that.

“I still believe this squad is better than 70% of teams in the First Division, however, the performances of the players are a different matter,” he added.

Sevilla play league leaders Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday, for what will be a huge test for their new-look squad.
