kicker reports that VfB Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß is Bayer Leverkusen‘s dream candidate to replace Xabi Alonso if he leaves in the summer.
The future of current head coach Alonso is up in the air amid speculation linking him to the Real Madrid job as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement as well as even Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s replacement. This means that Leverkusen has to prepare for his eventual departure and already has their ideal candidate.
Hoeneß is said to have been of interest to Leverkusen for a while after his exploits in leading VfB Stuttgart to second place in the Bundesliga last season.
One of the main reasons behind the draw to Hoeneß is his release clause. The Nephew of Bayern Munich’s Uli Hoeneß is said to have €5-6m release clause in his contract which runs until 2027. A sum that would not be expensive for Leverkusen to activate.
However, Hoeneß is not the only candidate that Leverkusen are looking at. Julian Nagelsmann’s assistant coach on the German national team Sandro Wagner is also said to be on their list.
