Nico Schlotterbeck hopes Mats Hummels and club captain Marco Reus will extend their expiring contracts with Borussia Dortmund.

“I hope they stay, of course,” the centre-back said in an interview with Sport Bild.

“When Marco or Mats say something in the dressing room, their word carries weight and then it will be implemented.

“They are two great guys that I have learned to appreciate a lot. They have a lot of experience, they are good guys and above all they are both brutally good footballers.

The only Dortmund player to have started every Bundesliga game this season, Schlotterbeck has emerged as the club’s most secure starter at the heart of defense, ahead of Niklas Süle and Mats Hummels.

“I don’t think it’s an easy decision for the coach, because we have three very good center backs. Gratitude is a good word. I’m happy that Edin always starts me and trusts me even when I’ve made mistakes – and of course I want to pay him back.”
