Bayern Munich board member for sport Hasan Salihamidzic has backed Manchester City loanee Joao Cancelo to be “important” for the German champions after an up-and-down start in Germany.

After starting five games in a row for Bayern following his loan move from Manchester City, Cancelo was left out of the starting line-up three times in a row.

He then returned to the starting XI in Saturday’s 5-3 win over Augsburg, scoring and setting up a goal.

In an interview with Sport Bild, Salihamidzic reflected on the 28-year-old’s start to life at the Allianz Arena.

“We talked a lot with João. He needed two or three weeks to settle in. He has been excellent in training lately,” Salihamidzic admitted.

“He mostly played in the back four at City, which is a bit different. João will still be important for us, he can do everything.

Bayern reportedly have an option to sign Cancelo permanently for €70 million.
