‘Ruthless’ Marinakis now ‘frustrated’ at City Ground

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has shown his ‘ruthless’ streak by sacking key decision-makers behind the scenes at the City Ground, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Greek completed a takeover of the Midlands club in May 2017 and has not been afraid to show personnel the door as he looks to remain in the Premier League.

Who has been sacked by Nottingham Forest behind the scenes?

Head of recruitment George Syrianos and Andy Scott, the head scout, have been axed by Nottingham Forest after the club’s summer spending spree did not go to plan.

Having won promotion to the top flight for the first time in 23 years, thanks to overcoming Huddersfield Town in the Championship play-off final, Marinakis showed he was not afraid to splash the cash.

Close to £150million was spent on bolstering head coach Steve Cooper’s options, with the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White, Jesse Lingard and Taiwo Awoniyi among the recruits.

But, despite the heavy investment from Marinakis, Forest are in the Premier League’s relegation zone and have been struggling for wins.

Heavy defeats have also come against Manchester City and Leicester City, leaving the Reds in danger of an immediate drop into the second tier.

What has Dean Jones said about the sackings?

Jones believes Syrianos and Scott have been the fall guys following an underwhelming start to life back in the Premier League.

The journalist feels Marinakis is not impressed with the performances of the recent signings, but the sackings were potentially unwarranted.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I think they are certainly paying the price for the tough start to the season.

“I’m not sure how fair it is. The owner is frustrated by the lack of impact their signings have made so far, but is it realistic for 22 players to gel and be successful within nine games in the most competitive league in the world?

“It just goes to show how ruthless football is at the top level in this country.”

Have there been any other changes behind the scenes?

Filippo Giraldi was appointed as Forest’s new sporting director earlier this month and his arrival is expected to be part of a broader restructure.

Although it is understood that chief executive Dane Murphy’s job has come under threat, he has remained at the City Ground.

Despite Forest’s precarious position in the Premier League table, Marinakis has offered boss Cooper his backing and rewarded him with a fresh three-year contract.
