Romero Will ‘Push’ to Leave Tottenham After Europa League Final

Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero is on course to push to join Atletico Madrid regardless of whether the season ends with silverware as he is viewing a switch to the La Liga heavyweights from Hotspur Way as the perfect next move at this stage of his career, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.

Spurs will have to spend £20.9million of their summer budget on Kevin Danso, thanks to the central defender’s initial loan from Lens including an obligation to become permanent, but boss Ange Postecoglou is preparing to make changes to a squad which progressed to the Europa League final on Thursday.

Although Ben Davies and Sergio Reguilon are among the names edging closer to leaving Tottenham, thanks to their contracts – worth a combined total of £133,000-per-week – being due to expire at the end of June, Romero could also embark on a fresh challenge ahead of next season getting underway.

Romero is likely to seek a Tottenham exit after the Europa League final, according to GMS sources, as he has given indications that he is keen to complete a move to Atletico Madrid after they have begun pushing to lure him to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium when preparations have been made for the summer transfer window.

The World Cup-winning Argentina international is preparing to enter the final two years of a contract which allows him to pocket £165,000-per-week in north London, resulting in the Spanish giants’ head coach Diego Simeone sniffing an opportunity to pounce as plans are made for next season.

GMS sources have been informed that Romero decided earlier this year that he wants to leave Tottenham if the right club comes in for him and, having made more than 120 appearances in his current surroundings, feels Atletico Madrid would be the ideal destination as he aims to take his career in another direction.

The 27-year-old has been described as ‘world-class’ by Spurs teammate Micky van de Ven, highlighting that he would be seen as a significant loss by members of the dressing room, but it is becoming increasingly likely that he will move onto pastures new after facing Manchester United in the Europa League final.

Romero is not poised to alter his stance regardless of whether Tottenham end their lengthy trophy drought, GMS sources have learned, but he has agreed to fully focus on the remaining fixtures of the season and lifting silverware instead of entering negotiations over a switch to Atletico Madrid.

GMS sources have been told that Atletico Madrid are planning to open talks over a move for Romero later this month, following the Europa League final on May 21, but lengthy negotiations will be needed to find common ground as he is valued by Tottenham at £65million when his admirers have been hoping to reach an agreement for £40million.

The central defender fuelled speculation that he could leave north London by publicly confirming a desire to head to Spain, giving the Rojiblancos further optimism of being able to acquire his services in the coming weeks, and that has led to Postecoglou having to come to terms with his potential departure.

Atletico Madrid have been forced to remain patient even though they have been keen to discuss terms, GMS sources understand, but it is believed that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy would be prepared to cash in on Romero after going head-to-head with domestic counterparts Manchester United in the Europa League final.
