Romano Shares Update On Man Utd’s January Transfer Plans

Manchester United did not get all of the business they wanted to get done in the summer transfer window and will look to attack the January transfer window to strengthen their squad. That’s according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

United signed three central midfielders this summer, which was their main priority, and a back-up goalkeeper, spending a lot less than some of their Premier League rivals.

Balking at the figures touted for the likes of Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, the Red Devils instead opted for Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba, while also adding Karl Darlwo to their ranks on a free.

They had been in the market for a left-back, while there was talk of a forward coming into the club too, but they could not get any other deals over the line.

United have endured their worst start to a Premier League season for 40 years, with just six points from their opening six games. A draw against rock bottom Tottenham, who only had ten men, last time out exacerbated their disappointing situation and piled further pressure on manager Michael Carrick’s shoulders.

Carrick had been given the job permanently following an impressive spell in interim charge in the second half of the 2025/26 season, during which time they actually amassed more points than eventual champions Arsenal.

There remains faith behind the scenes that Carrick can turn things around and there will not be a knee-jerk reaction in sacking him yet, but results will need to improve if he is to keep hold of his job and have the funds to spend in January.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano opened up on United’s transfer plans in the winter window.

He said: “Many of you already asked ‘With Man United going this bad in the Premier League, is there a chance they attack the market in the January window?

My answer is ‘yes’, in the sense that if this will remain a situation in terms of results, and if the right players appear available on the market.

“Manchester United had some money already in August to do more, apart from the three midfielders they signed to do something more. Left-back for example. Not crazy money, but still money to do something.

“Man United’s feeling was that the right profiles, the right players, were not available on the market with a few days, few weeks left to the end of the summer transfer window, and this is why they decided not to proceed.

“Some of the players they wanted were not available. Giving you an example, Lewis Hall, the player they wanted from Newcastle, was not available, and then he signed a new deal. So Man United believe if the right opportunities are there in terms of players, and if their form remains poor, Man United will still be keen on signing players. Let’s see how many.

“This is too early to say, but United would study opportunities in the market in the January transfer window.”
