When Evan Ferguson first broke out at Brighton & Hove Albion, the world had to take notice. This was a teenager who looked like the complete package at #9. He looked genuinely ready to explode and become world class all at a tender age. However, a nagging knee injury kept him out for a while and since has really impacted his game. He barely received any game time at Brighton once he returned from injury last season and since that a failed loan move at West Ham has followed.
As per reports, Roma are close to finalising a loan deal for the Irishman. It will be a simple loan with Roma covering his salary. This could be a really fascinating move for them. While Roma do have Artem Dobvyk, if Ferguson can find a way to return to his previous trajectory, he is meant for big things. And given the track record, there’s hardly a manager in world football who can get the best out of a forward better than Gian Piero Gasperini.
Gasperini loves big number #9s – Duvan Zapata, Rasmus Højlund, Gianluca Scamacca, Mateo Retegui. It is believed that Ferguson was a personal request from him too. If Ferguson can get back to his best, he could well fire Roma into title reckoning. After all this was a player being touted for £100m moves to all of Premier League’s elite just a couple of years ago.
