Real Madrid Women vs Atletico Madrid Women Preview
The Women’s Spanish Cup Final takes place in Leganes this weekend and it’s a Madrid derby as Real and Atleti face off with their eyes on the big prize. It’s a rare opportunity for somebody other than Barcelona, who are the dominant force in women’s football in this country, to win a major trophy.
It has been a controversial season in the Copa de la Reina with holders Barcelona and Sevilla disqualified in the Last 16 after fielding ineligible players. The absence of the Catalans means Real Madrid Femenino, only officially formed into 2020, now have a really good chance to win their first ever major trophy.
They needed Extra Time to win their Quarter Final tie at Villarreal but looked confident in midweek as they swept past Athletic Club 4-0 with a brace from Caroline Weir in the Semi Final which, like this game, took place at Leganes’ Estadio Butarque. That made it 7 wins out of 8 in all competitions for Las Blancas so they take really good form into this match. They finished 2nd in Liga F with 18 more points than their city rivals, so they will be the favourites here.
Atletico Madrid also won 4-0 in their Semi Final in midweek against Alhama. There was never really any doubt after 20 year old Sonia García Majarín gave them the lead in just the 5th minute and it was 3-0 by the break which enabled the side from the capital to make changes and rest players ahead of the big showdown on Saturday night which should be played out in front of a full stadium with two local sides in action.
Unlike their opponents, Atleti do have a more impressive history with a number of major trophies under their name, although they have only won this competition once. That was back in 2016 but they’ve also been losing finalists on three occasions.
Score Prediction: Real Madrid 1-0 Atletico Madrid
Real Madrid’s late decision to commit to starting a women’s team was widely criticised but they’ve made a lot of progress in a short amount of time and are in a strong position here to win their first ever trophy. If they can handle the big occasion well, Real Madrid have a little bit more quality than Atleti and should get the job done, although it is likely to be tight with just 1 goal in the 2 league meetings this season, scored by Las Blancas in December.
