Rayan Cherki extends contract with Lyon

Rayan Cherki’s emergence as a regular fixture for Lyon this season has seen the 19-year-old attract attention beyond the confines of Ligue 1, with his playmaking efforts proving instrumental in his formative club’s spring revival.

According to L’Équipe this evening, the French youth international has seen his contract automatically extended by an additional season, until the end of the 2024/25 campaign, a clause which was to be triggered after playing a certain number of games as a starter.

Cherki, who was notably close to joining Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the January transfer window, will now be earning around €300,000 a month. Lyon will now be able to command a higher transfer fee this summer from potential suitors, having previously been in a precarious negotiating position given his previous deal was expiring at the end of next season.

The attacking midfielder will be looking to add to his three goals and five assists this season as Lyon look to clinch what once looked like an unlikely spot in Europe for next season – a run-in that starts with a trip to Strasbourg tomorrow night.
