Raheem Sterling can see ultimate wish granted at Chelsea if Todd Boehly secures £45m transfer

Raheem Sterling is carefully considering his future as he enters the final 12 months of his contract at Manchester City. Chelsea are very interested in the 27-year-old winger and have been in contact over a possible move this summer football.london understands.

While there has been contact with Sterling, no official offer has been made just yet by the Blues, who are waiting on Romelu Lukaku’s loan move to Inter Milan to become official. Chelsea believe they can sign Sterling for £45million because of his contract situation at the Etihad Stadium.

Sterling is managing negotiations over his future this summer, with the England international keen to find somewhere where he will be a regular in the starting XI. The only reason Sterling would want to leave City, who were recently crowned Premier League champions for the second season in a row, would be if he could see himself as a crucial player elsewhere.

“If there was an opportunity to go somewhere else [for more game time], I would be open to it at this moment in time,” Sterling said last year when asked about his future at the FT Business of Sport US summit. “As I said, football is the most important thing to me – challenges that I have set myself from a young age and dreams as well, to play abroad.”

More game time is something Sterling would surely get if he did sign for Chelsea. The Blues’ attacking players struggled to find their consistency levels last season, and it led to an underperforming attack in the Premier League.

Bar Mason Mount, who scored 11 goals and created a further 10, not one Chelsea forward really came out of the 2021/22 season with a strong return. Kai Havertz had his moments, particularly that spell in the second half of the season where he scored six goals in seven matches but was unable to perform at a high level throughout the campaign.

Christian Pulisic, when handed the opportunity, couldn’t cement himself as Thomas Tuchel’s go-to man. Likewise, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech were left frustrated with their lack of chances in the first team.

The majority of Chelsea’s attacking players failed to make a real impression last term, and it’s led to uncertainty over their future this summer. Even if they do stay put, the addition of Sterling is likely to see the England winger replace them in the first team.

Sterling is a proven winner. In his time at Man City, he’s won four Premier League titles, an FA Cup and five League Cups. In the process, the Jamaican-born winger has scored 131 goals in 339 appearances in the sky blue shirt.

The former Liverpool winger is now getting into the ‘prime’ years of his career, and Chelsea could be getting themselves a real bargain for less than £50m. It’s now up to the club to act fast before Real Madrid, who are also interested, take a punt on Sterling, or Man City convinces him to sign a new contract.
