PSG suffer worst start of the year in 22 years

These are hard times for PSG. Les Parisiens have suffered a second Ligue 1 home loss on the bounce on Sunday, Lyon inflicting Les Parisiens an eighth loss in 18 games played all competitions since the turn of the year. PSG haven’t had a start to the year this disappointing results-wise since 2001, when the squad, notably made up of Mauricio Pochettino, Mikel Arteta, Jay-Jay Okocha or Nicolas Anelka, lost nine times in 18 games, according to Opta.

In 2023, PSG have lost twice against both Rennes (0-1, 0-2) and Bayern Munich (0-1, 0-2), the latter in the round of 16 of the Champions League. They fell to defeat against Lens (1-3), Monaco (1-3) and now Lyon (0-1) in the league and they also exited the Coupe de France at the RO16 stage at the hands or arch-rivals Marseille (1-2).

Thanks to their brilliant first half of the season before the 2022 World Cup, PSG have still a 6-point lead on Lens and Marseille, but their current momentum is worrying. And the Christophe Galtier-led side won’t have it easy in the coming weeks. They will travel to Didier Digard’s unbeaten Nice side on Saturday and host second-placed Lens the week after for a season-defining clash at the top.
