Ongoing Augustin transfer dispute likely nixes Adams’ move to Leeds

According to German footballing magazine Kicker, RB Leipzig have no interest in selling USMNT captain Tyler Adams to Leeds whilst the Kevin Augustin transfer dispute remains unresolved.

A report from Sky Germany last week suggesting that RB Leipzig may be “keen” to offload American midfielder Tyler Adams to Leeds United  made sense on some levels. The 23-year-old USMNT captain has played a significantly less important role under the head-coaching regime of RB trainer Domenico Tedesco and would presumably wish to be reunited with former coach and compatriot Jesse Marsch over in Yorkshire.

As Oliver Hartmann of Germany’s preeminent footballing publication was “keen” to point out on an article appearing on Kicker magazine’s website on Sunday evening, however, there remains a fairly obvious reason why this would not work. Namely, the relationship between the German and English club remains totally toxic following the Jean-Kevin Augustin transfer dispute.

Hartmann cites English sources who also affirm that there can be no business between Leipzig and Leeds before the matter of the 2020 dispute can be resolved. Both sides still await a fresh ruling from the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Some €21 million remains at stake in the case involving what Leipzig claims was an obligatory purchase clause not voided by any COVID stipulations.

Augustin himself has long departed Leeds and just completed a transfer to Switzerland this week. It does seem highly unlikely that the Bundesliga side would wish to do business with the EPL side. There may nevertheless be other outlets for Adams, who has also been linked Sevilla FC.
