Olympique de Marseille’s extensive search for a new goalkeeper has today ended with the official announcement that the club have signed Gerónimo Rulli (32) from Ajax.
It had been clear ahead of the last game of the season that Marseille’s relationship with Pau López (29) was coming to an end. The Spaniard had spent the past three seasons as the man between the posts, but he could sense that a new project was building and his presence was no longer required in La Provence.
Marseille had cast a wide net looking for a replacement for López with Filip Jörgensen (22, now at Chelsea) and Álvaro Valles (26) among the names that the club were heavily linked to. However, they eventually landed on Rulli, a goalkeeper who represents the vision that Roberto De Zerbi has begun to mould in the South of France.
A return to France for Gerónimo Rulli
The former Montpellier HSC and Real Sociedad man is comfortable on the ball and willing to build from the back and will enter the squad as the undisputed number one. However, the arrival of Jeffrey de Lange (26) means there will be some competition and the Argentine Olympian cannot rest on his laurels.
