Official | Didier Deschamps announces France squad for Euro 2024

France national team boss Didier Deschamps has revealed this Thursday evening the 25-man squad set to take part in the Euro 2024. As is customary for the past major tournaments, the Les Bleus boss has revealed his choices on TF1′s evening news show. PSG striker Kylian Mbappé (25), who missed the decisive spot-kick during France’s shock exit at the RO16 stage of Euro 2020 against Switzerland, will have the opportunity to right those wrongs. The Euro 2024 will be his first major tournament wearing the skipper’s armband for France.

The biggest surprise of the announcement is the unexpected return of N’Golo Kanté (33). The midfielder has not been called up for international duty since 3rd June 2022. Deschamps has called up only one debutant with PSG winger Bradley Barcola (21). The former Lyon youth product’s versatility and dribbling ability will surely prove an asset for France. The youngest player in the squad is PSG midfield sensation Warren Zaïre-Emery (18), who was crowned Young Ligue 1 Player of the Year on Monday during the UNFP Awards. At the opposite of the age spectrum, Olivier Giroud (37) is expected to play his final major tournament with Les Bleus this summer in Germany before his summer move to LAFC.

PSG left-back Lucas Hernandez is the most notable absentee. The 2018 World Cup winner sustained a season-ending ACL rupture during Les Parisiens‘ Champions League semi-final away loss against Dortmund. Despite sustaining injury niggles, Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni (24) and Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman (27) have both been called up by Deschamps.

France, who have not won the Euros since the 2000 edition, will play two friendly games before flying off to Germany. The first one will be played against Luxembourg, at Metz, on June 5. Four days later, Les Bleus will take on Canada at Bordeaux. The 2022 World Cup runners-up will kick off their Euros against Austria, on June 17th at Leipzig. They will then play The Netherlands, on June 21, at Leipzig before ending their group stage against Poland, on June 25 at Dortmund.
