Nübel insists Bayern move wasn’t a mistake

Alexander Nübel has rejected suggestions that he made the wrong decision when he joined Bayern Munich in 2020.

After impressing for Schalke 04 as a youngster, Alexander Nübel opted to join Bayern Munich on a free transfer in the summer of 2020.

He made just four appearances in his first season with the Bavarians and has since spent time on loan, first at Monaco and now at VfB Stuttgart, where he’s staying until 2026.

Nübel has received plenty of criticism for his decision to join Bayern, but the 27-year-old insists it wasn’t the wrong one.

“People may say it was a wasted year and I had no business being there. But being able to train at that level helped me progress. It doesn’t matter which Bundesliga team you come to FC Bayern from as a goalkeeper, you definitely make a leap forward. I needed time to adapt. But that time also made me the goalkeeper I am today,” Nübel told T-Online.

It’s clear, though, that Nübel would have preferred to play more for Bayern.

“Yes, there was hope. But I also knew that Manuel Neuer was my rival and that I had to take a back seat. I wanted to learn and take everything I could from Manu. Here, with the national team, I learn from him every day,” said the goalkeeper.

When Bayern decided to extend Nübel’s loan to Stuttgart until 2026, they also extended his contract until 2029, meaning he still has a good chance of eventually becoming the first-choice goalkeeper at the Allianz Arena.
