Nicolò Zaniolo set to stay at Roma despite Premier League interest

The longest transfer saga in Italian football this window seems to be over, as Nicolò Zaniolo will remain at Roma this winter.

Even on deadline day, Premier League clubs seemed in the running to bring in 23-year-old Zaniolo, but according to Daniele Longo, the Italian won’t leave the capital. Longo adds that Zaniolo is waiting for Milan in June and that he gives priority to joining the current Scudetto holders.

Leeds United made an effort, but Bournemouth looked closest to securing Zaniolo’ signature. Gianluca di Marzio has reported that last night, Zaniolo had accepted the idea of joining Bournemouth as his next club after Roma. But it proved too late, as Bournemouth directors had moved on to other targets and even though the Italian was ready to head to England in the morning, the Cherries had already sealed a move for Hamed Traore.

It remains to be seen what will happen with Zaniolo now, as he has been excluded from Roma’s technical project.
