Newcastle could move for £60m ‘super talent’ at St James’ Park

Newcastle United’s desire for a player to “share in the contribution of goals” could open the door for Leicester City and England’s James Maddison to make the move to Eddie Howe’s side at St. James’ Park, CBS reporter Ben Jacobs has told GiveMeSport.

The Magpies are interested in a move for the Foxes star who has 18 months remaining on his £110k-per-week contract at the King Power Stadium.

Newcastle transfer news – James Maddison

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who was writing in his CaughtOffside column, Newcastle really like Maddison but at the time of writing there are no negotiations taking place between the Magpies and Leicester.

The north east club ambitiously tried to lure the East Midlands club into selling the attack-minded midfielder during the summer transfer window, having made an unsuccessful bid of £40m+, with the Foxes valuing Maddison at a fee closer to £60m, as per Sky Sports.

However, with the 26-year-old’s contract winding down, Leicester may feel that this transfer window is the last chance they’ll get to maximise the money they receive for the former Norwich City man, who has been described as a “super talent” by pundit talkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy.

Journalist Jacque Talbot recently told GiveMeSport that a potential Magpies swoop for the one-cap England international is “very possible” this month.

And Jacobs believes that Newcastle would like to add another player to share in their contribution of goals, with Maddison seemingly being an ideal target in this regard.

What has Jacobs said about Newcastle and Maddison?

Jacobs told GiveMeSport: “They would still like to add a little bit more support and somebody that can share in the contribution of goals.

“Therefore, that opens up the door to players like James Maddison, who we know that Newcastle bid for last summer.

“They put down an offer somewhere in the region of £45m and Leicester were having none of it.”

Would Maddison be a good signing for Newcastle?

Maddison would likely prove to be an excellent signing for Newcastle this winter, with the attacking midfielder improving their already impressive starting XI, something which may convince PIF to take the plunge and pay the £60m Leicester are asking for.

Despite Brendan Rodgers’ side having endured a troublesome start to the campaign the Coventry-born star has been in excellent form, scoring seven goals and providing four assists in 13 Premier League appearances, according to Transfermarkt.

And an average WhoScored rating of 7.39 for his displays in the top flight this campaign unsurprisingly ranks him as the Foxes’ top-performing player, which goes some way to explaining why the East Midlands side value him at such a high fee.

Therefore, it’s no wonder to see why Newcastle are admirers of Maddison, but whether they can get a deal over the line this month remains to be seen.
