Newcastle close in on £55m move for Wissa

Newcastle United are set to sign Brentford striker Yoane Wissa in a deal worth £55 million, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The move comes as Alexander Isak edges closer to completing a transfer to Liverpool. Eddie Howe is pushing for attacking reinforcements this season.

A key figure at Brentford

Wissa has played a central role for Brentford in recent seasons. He built a strong strike partnership with Bryan Mbeumo, who himself completed a transfer to Manchester United earlier this summer.

The 28-year-old enjoyed his best season in English football last term, scoring 20 goals and adding five assists across all competitions.

His finishing ability and consistent movement made him one of the most dangerous forwards in the Premier League.

Since joining Brentford from French club Lorient in 2021, Wissa has established himself as a reliable forward.

Statistics show that he has featured in 149 matches for the Bees, scoring 49 goals during that period.

The deal and added clause

According to The Athletic, the transfer agreement includes a 25 per cent sell-on clause for Brentford. The clause could see the club benefit further if Newcastle choose to sell Wissa in the future.

The striker had to issue a personal statement before Brentford finally agreed to release him.

The club had initially resisted the idea of selling one of their key players, but Wissa was determined to push through the move.

The Congolese international will now look to continue his fine form at St James’ Park.

Howe views him as a player who can immediately boost Newcastle’s attacking options and bring goals to the team.

Newcastle have also sealed the arrival of striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart, underlining their determination to build a stronger squad

The Magpies will be hoping Wissa replicates his Brentford output as they aim to push further up the Premier League table this season.
