Real Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal was taken off in the 37th minute of Spain’s European Championship qualifier against Cyprus on Thursday.
According to AS, the first examination indicates that he has muscular discomfort in the hamstring area. In the next few hours, the severity of the injury will be determined by further tests.
The 26-year-old was one of the bright sparks for Luis de la Fuente’s side, scoring in the 22nd minute to make it 2-0 to the visitors. Spain were in complete control and Joselu increased that control by making it 3-0 just minutes later.
However, just before half-time Oyarzabal was about to take a shot on goal, but felt pain in the back of his leg. The player immediately realised the seriousness of the injury and signalled to the bench for a substitution. Atlético Madrid player Rodrigo Riquelme replaced the Real Sociedad player, making his international debut for the senior team.
The forward is set to leave the national team and return to Spain to begin his recovery treatment at Real Sociedad and it now remains to be seen when he will return to action. The side from San Sebastián face Sevilla in La Liga next.
