Mike Maignan slams decision to play Milan v Como game in Australia

AC Milan keeper Mike Maignan has responded sharply to the decision to play the Milan vs Como Serie A fixture in Australia, insinuating that financial considerations have overtaken sporting logic. Speaking in a press conference, Maignan aligned himself with Adrien Rabiot’s earlier criticism, saying: “I absolutely agree with Rabiot. I don’t understand why we’re playing abroad … today many things are forgotten, people only think about the financial side.” (via Corriere dello Sport)

He lamented that what should have been a home match is effectively stripped of home advantage. “This is an Italian league match, we should have played at home — we ‘lose’ a home game,” he added.

While critical in tone, Maignan stopped short of refusing the decision — he framed his words more as protest than rebellion. His comments underscore growing disquiet among players over league decisions that depart from tradition and fan expectations.

The goalkeeper’s words may put pressure on Milan’s management and Serie A to justify the move before a wider backlash takes hold — especially from fans and stakeholders for whom legitimacy matters beyond the bottom line.
