Seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher isn’t expected to make a return to the public eye, according to a former F1 colleague.

Richard Hopkins, the former Red Bull Head of Operations, who became friends with Schumacher during their time working in the sport, has predicted the German won’t be seen any time soon following his tragic skiing accident in 2013.

Just a year after his retirement from the sport, where Schumacher left as the greatest of all time before Lewis Hamilton equalled his world championship record, the driver sustained life-threatening injuries on a skiing trip in the French Alps.

Schumacher is now said to be spending his time in his home in Lake Geneva, with an absolute focus on privacy for the sporting superstar with his medical team and wife, Corinna.

Hopkins and Schumacher first crossed paths in the 1990s, and built a rapport over their shared time in the sport.

Speaking to SPORTbible, as per The Sun, Hopkins said: “I don’t think we’ll see Michael again. I’m slightly uncomfortable talking about his condition because of how secretive, for the right reasons, the family wants to keep it.

“So I can make a remark, have an opinion, but I’m not in that inner circle.”

Former F1 colleagues Jean Todt, Ross Brawn, and Gerhard Berger were named as those in the Schumacher ‘inner circle’, but the expectation remains that the racing hero won’t ever be seen publicly again.

Hopkins highlighted how important privacy remains among those closest to Schumacher, acknowledging the struggles over the past 12 years.

“That’s the way the family wants it to be. I think that’s fair and respectful towards the family. Even if I did know, the family would be disappointed if I shared anyway.”

Schumacher’s son, 26-year-old Mick, has recently announced his move away from Formula One after two years in a seat. He had the opportunity to become a reserve driver for Cadillac in the 2026 season, however, he has opted to step out of his father’s career path and sign with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing for the 2026 IndyCar season.
