Matteo Guendouzi hints towards Marseille return

Matteo Guendouzi (24) has hinted that he would be open to a return to Olympique de Marseille in an interview with Canal+

Guendouzi joined Marseille from Arsenal initially on loan before making the deal permanent before the start of last season. In his two years with the Olympians, the midfielder stood out as a combative leader on the field. However, the frequent change of managers at Marseille left Guendouzi less involved in the starting lineup.

And by the start of this season, it was not obvious where the midfielder would fit within then-manager Marcelino’s system. SS Lazio saw in this predicament an opportunity and secured Guendouzi’s services on a loan deal with an option to buy the player.

Despite, enjoying his time in Serie A and progressing into the Round of 16 of the Champions League, Guendouzi has not closed the doors on a future return to Marseille. “Return to Marseille one day? It’s a great question. Right now, I’m very happy at Lazio… We work with a great coach, I’m a starter, everything is going well for me and I’m fulfilled where I am.”

However, the midfielder continued to say, “But everyone knows the attachment I have for Marseille, its supporters, the city… I really fell in love with the club. So it’s obviously something that could happen in the future.”

Despite needing to leave to secure game time, Guendouzi has no regrets over his time with Marseille, “I don’t blame anyone. I’m very happy with what I did in Marseille. I would have liked to bring home a trophy. It’s something that was close to my heart but unfortunately, we failed to do so. I only remember positive things about Marseille.”
