Speaking in a press conference ahead of France’s match against the Netherlands, Marcus Thuram (25) described the current crop of players as “reckless.”
The latest France squad is a young one. Some of the old guard, such as Hugo Lloris, have ceded their places, whilst youngsters such as Khéphren Thuram, Jean-Clair Todibo, Eduardo Camavinga, Youssouf Fofana and Randal Kolo Muani are cementing their spots in the France squad.
K. Thuram and Todibo both got their first call-ups with the latter taking the place of another young French player, Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana, who withdrew through injury.
On Tuesday, Didier Deschamps named Kylian Mbappé as the new captain of Les Bleus, another unmistakable sign of the centrality of youth in this France squad. Asked about the mindset of the increasing number of young players within the France squad, Thuram praised their fearlessness.
“We are players that have a lot of confidence in ourselves. We don’t ask ourselves worthless questions when we take to the pitch. Randal Kolo Muani shouldn’t have even been at the World Cup and he came on in the final and almost changed it. We’re a reckless generation, and we’re not scared of much, ” said Borussia Mönchengladbach striker Thuram in a conference transcribed by RMC Sport.
