Manchester United closing in on reaching a £69 million agreement with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United have made significant progress in their quest to acquire the services of Frenkie de Jong with the Red Devils now close to striking a deal with Barcelona, per The Telegraph.

According to the report, Barcelona want £73.2 milion and have already rejected an opening offer of around £56m from United but the two clubs are now close to reaching a common-ground price of £69m.

This could see the Catalan giants step up their interest in Bernando Silva with Xavi Hernandez keen to snap up the 27-year-old Portuguese as a replacement for de Jong in the event that he leaves the Camp Nou.

De Jong has been earmarked as the main target for Erik ten Hag as the former Ajax manager seeks a reunion with the midfielder following their time together at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

While personal terms are yet to be agreed on, United expect to finalise an agreement with de Jong without any hitches and are hopeful of concluding the deal as early as the end of this week before training for pre-season gets underway.

Off the back of a series of departures from the club over the last couple of weeks, the 20-time English champions are on the verge of making their first acquisition of the Premier League transfer window and that could help set the tone for the rest of the summer.

Another one of ten Hag’s former players in Antony is wanted in the red half of Manchester and a potential deal for the Brazilian winger could accelerate once United successfully cross de Jong off their bucket list.

Christian Eriksen could also be on his way to Old Trafford with United and Brentford believed to be frontrunners to land the Denmark international, who is poised to announce a decision on his future in the coming days.
