Manchester City Forward Could Exit amid Transfer Links With Madrid

The Guardian has recently reported that Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling could exit the Etihad Stadium amid transfer rumours linking him with Real Madrid. It has also been mentioned that Los Blancos are in search of a winger to strengthen their frontline, and they have identified the English forward as a potential option this summer.

Sterling’s Campaign For Manchester City This Season

The 27-year-old has showcased impressive displays throughout the season despite losing his way in Pep Guardiola’s starting XI. He has managed to score 17 goals and create eight assists over 47 appearances for the Sky Blues across all competitions.

The Jamaica-born sensation has proven to be a consistent performer after averaging 1.9 shots, 1.4 key passes and 1.8 dribbles per game in the Premier League.

He has also been decent with his ball distribution from the wide areas of the pitch, as he has completed 85.4% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).

Should Manchester City Boss Pep Guardiola Cut Him Loose?

Sterling can use his pace to cut inside from the left flank, and he excels at creating space for himself. This allows him to produce some clear cut goal-scoring opportunities. The winger can even chip in with a few assists creating meaningful chances in front of the goal.

At 27, Sterling has proven to be a deadly attacker and can continue to improve each season, with a lot of room for improvement. Furthermore, he is primarily a left-winger but remains versatile enough to virtually play in any position in the final third.

Guardiola has had faith in Sterling since his arrival, but recently we’ve seen a prominent decrease in the forward’s game time. With the Sky Blues bringing in Erling Haaland and Phil Foden being a preferred option for Guardiola at the left wing, Raheem Sterling would more likely be seen coming off the bench next season.

It would still be wise for Pep to retain his services for a couple more seasons by offering him a contract extension, but at this point of his career, the England international will be looking to feature as a regular starter. Should he choose to move away, Real Madrid would be a prefered destination this summer.
