Man Utd now ‘more likely to sign’ Gakpo than £103m star

Manchester United are more likely to sign Cody Gakpo than Goncalo Ramos, claims transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Red Devils have been linked with both players after their World Cup heroics, but Jones says the former remains the priority for Erik ten Hag.

Man United transfer news – Cody Gakpo and Goncalo Ramos

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth recently told GIVEMESPORT that United could revisit a deal to sign Gakpo after registering an interest in the PSV Eindhoven man during the summer.

If rumours are to be believed, Ramos is another player who the Manchester club could make a move for in the January transfer window.

According to The Telegraph, United may turn to the Benfica and Portugal striker as they look to replace his international team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ramos is expected to cost a lot of money, though, with 90min reporting that he has a rumoured release clause set at around £103m.

What has Dean Jones said about Cody Gakpo, Goncalo Ramos and Man United?

Jones has told GMS that United are more likely to sign Gakpo than Ramos.

On the two World Cup stars, the journalist said: “In terms of comparing him [Gakpo] to somebody like Goncalo Ramos, I’m not sure we can really directly compare them as transfer options. I think they bring slightly different things to the table.

“I’d say Gakpo is more likely to sign of the two as it stands right now with the extensive scouting they’ve done on him and the type of player he is.”

How did Cody Gakpo and Goncalo Ramos perform at the World Cup?

Both Gakpo and Ramos will be pleased with their performances in Qatar. Of course, they would have liked their countries to have gone much further in the tournament, but the World Cup was still far from a disaster for the two players.

As per Transfermarkt, Gakpo scored an impressive three goals in five appearances, while Ramos registered three in four, with all of those strikes coming in the dismantling of Switzerland.

“What an incredible night for Goncalo Ramos,” former England striker Gary Lineker wrote on Twitter after the Benfica man’s hat-trick in Portugal’s 6-1 win over their last 16 opponents.

“With all the pressure of replacing one of the footballing greats, he scores a hat-trick. Remarkable.”

Be it Gakpo or Ramos, United could definitely do with a new attacker coming in after Ronaldo’s departure. Ramos would perhaps be a more like-for-like replacement, but Gakpo looks as if he will come at a much cheaper price.
