Man Utd ‘making moves behind the scenes’ over £200k-a-week star at Old Trafford

Manchester United have set their sights on offering Marcus Rashford a new contract which would make him ‘the highest-paid player’ at Old Trafford, football journalist Steve Bates has told GiveMeSport.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag is keen to tie the winger down to fresh terms after he has enjoyed a productive first half of the season.

Man United contract news – Marcus Rashford

According to the Daily Star, Manchester United are preparing to put a £400,000-per-week contract offer on the table which, if accepted, would make Rashford the highest-paid player on their books.

The report suggests the Red Devils are desperate for their academy product to put pen-to-paper after the rejection of a £300,000-per-week proposal has led to Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain stepping up their interest.

Since Rashford’s return from the World Cup, Manchester United have triggered a 12-month extension to his current contract.

The Red Devils took advantage of the option written into the England international’s £200,000-per-week deal as, otherwise, it was due to expire next summer and he would have been free to sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club at the turn of the year.

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth recently told GiveMeSport that Rashford ‘loves it at Manchester United’ and wants to stay with his boyhood club.

What has Steve Bates said about Rashford?

Bates understands that Manchester United are set to offer Rashford a lucrative new contract as they want him to commit his long-term future to the club.

The journalist believes the 25-year-old would head to the top of the Red Devils’ payroll if he signs on the dotted line.

Bates told GiveMeSport: “I think there are moves behind-the-scenes now to get a big contract in front of Rashford.

“Over time, certainly in the next year or two, I think that will make him the highest-paid player at the club.”

Should Rashford commit his long-term future to Man United?

Rashford has made a huge impact since bursting onto the scene and already scored 102 goals in 323 appearances for Manchester United, according to Transfermarkt.

It looked like a move away from Old Trafford may have been best for the wide-man when he struggled last season and was restricted to just 13 Premier League starts under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

But there is no doubt that ten Hag, who was appointed as Manchester United’s chief in April, has helped Rashford to rediscover his best form.

Under the Dutchman, he has been the Red Devils’ top goalscorer in the Premier League this season, while Christian Eriksen is the only teammate to have amassed a greater number of assists.

With that being the case, Rashford should not hesitate in putting pen-to-paper if Manchester United’s forthcoming contract offer meets his demands.
